Inner Journeys - 2734 Words
More than anything else inner journeys are about the challenge of self reflection . Do you agree? An inner journey involves the exploration of the self, as individuals review their growth and development in light of experiences which challenges and inspires them. More than anything else, inner journeys are about the challenge of self-reflection. The following texts ââ¬ËWe All Fall Downââ¬â¢ by Robert Cormier, ââ¬ËBaghdad Weddingââ¬â¢ by Hassan Abdulrazzak and ââ¬ËThings have changedââ¬â¢ by Bob Dylan emphasise how one reflects on the ways an inner journey provides new insight and an understanding of the world and themselves. Robert Cormierââ¬â¢s thriller novel ââ¬ËWe All Fall Downââ¬â¢ explores the April Fools Day trashing of the Jeromeââ¬â¢s house that leaves the youngestâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦His addiction began when he met Harry Flowers who introduced him to ââ¬Ëboozeââ¬â¢. Since then Harry was able to manipulate Buddy which led to his first downfall the trashing of the Jeromeââ¬â¢s house. ââ¬Å"He drifted, let others do the leading. Like Harry Flowers. Following him in his exploits, into that house and the terrible things they did.â⬠Buddy reflects on his participation in the trashing. Although he didnââ¬â¢t take part in the assault on Karen, it plays on his mind. The reader discovers that out of all the trashers Buddy is the only one with a conscience. He feels guilty for not helping Karen this seems overwhelming, particularly in light of Harryââ¬â¢s manipulative comment which makes the fall an accident ââ¬Å"Maybe I was trying to grab her and save her from falling.â⬠Buddy then through the events of the trashing isolates himself from friends and family. As the novel continues, Addy and Buddy begin to talk. Addy is concerned for Buddyââ¬â¢s growing dependence upon alcohol. ââ¬Å"Is that what you think it does? Make you more human? Let me tell you something, Buddy. It does just the opposite. Makes you a monster. A silly looking monster.â⬠Addy makes a remark on the theme of the novel she declares that ââ¬Å"The sins of omission are the sins od doing nothing.â⬠This quote is significant to the novel because Buddy has the responsibility to solve his problem of addiction on alcohol, self control and being independent.
